Fantasy Hockey Gold - March 18, 2010

I hope your St. Patty's hangover headache isn't as bad as Brent Seabrook's and anyone affiliated with the Chicago team - management, players and fans alike.  During the Ducks' 4-2 win over the visiting Blackhawks, James Wisniewski apparently knocked out defenseman Seabrook after he had dished out a borderline hit to star Corey Perry.  Wisniewski came in hard from the point gearing up the entire way to hit an unsuspecting Seabrook and brought the forearms up to knock him down - Seabrook was out on his feet.  Stay tuned to see if Chicago will lose another blueliner to injury.  For those of you who haven't seen the hit, we've added the video below. UPDATE:  Wisniewski was suspended for EIGHT games (although this may seem like a steep penalty, he is a repeat offender having been suspended already this year for two games, AND the hit was completely malicious in nature).

Another game, another win for Martin Brodeur.  The Devils' goalie notched his 39th win and is one victory away from his fourth 40+ win season in the last five years and this would be the eighth time he has accomplished this feat in his career.  Can anyone dispute that this is the best goaltender to ever skate in the blue paint?

I am not too sure what is happening with the high-end goaltenders during the fantasy playoff season, but add Marc-Andre Fleury to the list of netminders pulled from the game as he allowed four goals on 13 shots.  Tuesday saw elite goaltenders Evgeni Nabokov, Roberto Luongo and Ryan Miller give up a combined 11 goals on only 34 shots before heading to the bench.  Fantasy owners everywhere are running to the altar to sacrifice anything at hand to get their stars back on track.

Paul Martin returned to the ice after missing the previous 59 games due to a forearm injury.  He scored a goal in the Devils 5-2 win over the visiting Penguins and helped his team sweep the season series over the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

With 36 points in 45 games, Patrik Elias is providing solid fantasy numbers even at the deep centre position.  He scored his 13th on a shorthanded breakaway Wednesday and added an assist in the 5-2 win.  It should be noted that he has only 15 points in the last three months, but the worst of that stretch was back in January.  Keep plugging away here as the Devils look to finish strong down the stretch.

The Calgary Flames desperately needed a viable backup option for overused starter Miikka Kiprusoff, but Kipper owners cannot be happy to see this backup getting important starts (and wins) during the fantasy hockey playoffs. Vesa Toskala turned away 32 shots to record his second win as Flame and ninth of the 2009-10 season.  With the Flames in a battle for their own playoff lives, expect the goaltender that gives them the best shot at winning to get the start, and that just might be Toskala more than any Kipper owner would want.

Rene Bourque scored his 21st on a shorthanded breakaway (his fourth marker down a man) and his 22nd on the power play to set new offensive totals in all categories (except plus/minus).  He is one of the stories out of Cowtown.

For those interested in the Colorado blue line, and most should with a dynamic forward squad like the Avalanche have, undrafted rookie Ryan Wilson (3-14-17 in 53 games) left Wednesday's game in the first period with an apparent head injury.  The Avs are set to lose a number of key players, including some blueliners and that could open the door for Wilson to build on an impressing and unexpected rookie season.

The Blackhawks started Corey Crawford, but he continued with the poor decision making from between the pipes as he wandered out to play a puck only to see Todd Marchant tally shorthanded. This was the difference in the game (Anaheim's fourth goal was into the empty net) and the Chicago goaltending may be the difference between playoff success and the golf course.

Here's the Wisniewski hit on Seabrook:
